Western Traditional Festival: Halloween

Halloween, also known as All Hallows' Eve, is a traditional festival celebrated in the Western world on the evening of October 31st. It originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Over time, it has evolved into a holiday filled with costumes, decorations, and various customs.

One of the most popular traditions associated with Halloween is dressing up in costumes. People, especially children, often wear spooky or funny costumes to go trick-or-treating. The idea behind this tradition is to disguise oneself as a ghost or monster to blend in with the spirits that were believed to roam the earth on Halloween night. The children go from door to door, saying "trick or treat," and receive candies or other treats from the homeowners.

Another significant Halloween tradition is carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns. Originally, turnips were used for this purpose, but pumpkins became more popular in North America due to their abundance and larger size. The practice involves cutting out a face or a design on the pumpkin and placing a candle inside, creating an eerie glow. These jack-o'-lanterns are often displayed on doorsteps or windows to ward off evil spirits.

Halloween parties are also a common way to celebrate this festival. People gather with friends and family to enjoy games, music, and themed decorations. Bobbing for apples, a game in which participants try to catch apples in a basin of water using only their teeth, is a popular activity at these parties. Additionally, people often watch horror movies or tell ghost stories to create a spooky atmosphere.
